OBS overlays

Stream alerts for Kick, Twitch, YouTube and TikTok

On-stream alerts for follows, subs, gifted subs, raids, KICKs, Bits, TikTok gifts and tips. Design them with a visual editor, sounds, text to speech and variants.

Set up your alerts

  1. Add your overlay to OBS once (see the OBS overlays guide). Alerts are on in it by default.
  2. Open Alerts in the dashboard. Each alert type has its own tab.
  3. Choose a layout, add an image or video and a sound, and edit the text template. The live preview updates as you change things.
  4. Press the test buttons at the top to play each alert on your overlay. Tests never post in chat or move goals.

Design: classic layout or visual editor

The classic layout has three styles (Compact, Classic and Banner), three ways to arrange image and text, 38 entrance and exit animations, a name animation, fonts, colours and a duration from 2 to 30 seconds.

Switch to the visual editor to build an alert from up to 12 layers of images, videos, text and shapes on an 800×600 canvas, each with its own timing and animation. Start from a template or from scratch; it works on every plan.

Text templates use tokens such as {name}, {amount}, {months}, {gifter}, {currency} and {message}. The defaults read like “{name} followed!” and “{gifter} gifted {amount} subs!”.

Sounds and text to speech

Every alert can play a sound file at its own volume. Text to speech reads the viewer’s message aloud in a natural female or male voice, with the language detected per message. It is on by default for tips, and for tips and KICKs you can set a minimum amount before a message is read. Messages are read up to 300 characters, without links or emote codes.

Variants for bigger moments

Variants are alternative versions of an alert. A variant plays when the amount or months reach a value, when the event comes from a specific platform, or by random chance, and can change everything: design, sound and voice. If several match, an exact value wins, then the highest minimum reached. Free channels can add 5 variants per alert type, Premium channels 25.

The alert queue during a stream

Alerts play one at a time, in order. Twenty follows in a row are twenty alerts; a mass gift is one. Pause alerts, resume them or skip the current one from Alerts → Advanced settings → Tools, from the activity feed, or from the Activity dock inside OBS, which can also mute alert sounds.

If no overlay is connected, alerts wait up to 2 minutes and are then skipped. The activity feed keeps 90 days of events, and any event can be replayed with your current design.

Uploads and limits

Images can be PNG, JPEG, GIF or WebP, videos WebM or MP4, and sounds MP3, OGG or WAV.

Questions

Can I hide alerts below a certain amount?

There is no minimum for showing an alert, but a variant can style small and large amounts differently, and text to speech for tips and KICKs can start from a minimum amount. To stop an alert type completely, switch off Active alert on its tab.

Do channel-point redemptions trigger alerts?

No. Redemptions appear in the activity feed and the Redemptions dock, but they don’t play alerts.

Why didn’t an alert play?

Check that the alert type is active, that OBS had the overlay open (alerts are skipped after 2 minutes without one), and that alerts weren’t paused. The activity feed shows each event’s status.
